8 Steps to Creating Custom DIY Cryogenic Gaskets!

As we have mentioned before, we can help you save money by providing washers instead of specialty gaskets. (You just make the bolt holes during assembly.) Today we are discussing 2 different ways to take that thought to the next step, and make your own gaskets out of FOIL.

Method #1

Step 1: Measure flange inner and outer diameter.

Step 2: Add 0.25” to determine foil width. (Example: 2” wide foil for a 1.75” diameter flange)

Step 3: Contact us with your dimensions for 99.995% In foil. Our minimum order is 1oz of material. (3” x 4” x 0.020” thick is common)

Step 4: Use scissors to cut out a circle the size of the flange outer diameter.

Step 5: Find a thin-wall stainless steel tube with the same inner diameter as the flange.

Step 6: Bevel the end of the tube on a belt sander and use it to punch out the center of the washer.

Step 7: Align second flange and push bolts through gasket material. (A screwdriver can be used to push through thick gaskets.)

Step 8: Tighten bolts to specification.

Method #2

Step 1: Measure flange outer diameter.

Step 2: Add 0.25” to determine foil width.

Step 3: Contact us with your dimensions for foil.

Step 4: Place the foil over the flange.

Step 5: Use an X-ACTO® knife to trim excess material from inner diameter of flange with a saw-like motion.

Step 6: Align second flange and push bolts through gasket material.

Step 7: Tighten bolts to specification.

Step 8: Trim material from outside of flange area.

(Bonus) Step 9: Save the scrap, this can be returned for recycling to save money on future orders!
